How much power does a patio heater use?
When buying a patio heater, many people wonder: how much electricity does a heater actually use? It's a logical question, because you naturally want to know what it will cost you if you keep it running all evening. In this blog post, we explain it clearly with examples and helpful tips.
Average consumption of a patio heater
Power consumption depends on the heater's capacity. Most electric patio heaters have a capacity between 1,500 and 2,500 watts .
-
1,500 W heater → consumes 1.5 kWh per hour
-
2,000 W heater → consumes 2.0 kWh per hour
-
2,500 W heater → consumes 2.5 kWh per hour
👉 At an electricity price of approximately €0.40 per kWh , this means:
-
1,500 W costs approximately €0.60 per hour
-
2,000 W costs approximately €0.80 per hour
-
2,500 W costs approximately €1.00 per hour
How do you calculate it yourself?
Very simple:
Power in Watts ÷ 1,000 = kWh per hour
Then you multiply this by your own electricity rate.
Example: a 2,000 Watt heater × 1 hour = 2 kWh .
At €0.40 per kWh, this costs €0.80.
Tips to save energy
-
Choose a smart patio heater with different settings, so you don't always have to heat at full power.
-
Only turn on the heater when you are actually sitting outside.
-
Combine with a windbreak or canopy to retain the heat for longer.
