How do you clean a patio heater without damaging it?
A patio heater provides wonderful warmth on cool evenings, but like any appliance, it requires occasional maintenance. Dirt, dust, and insects can affect its operation and even shorten its lifespan. This blog post explains step-by-step how to clean your patio heater safely and without damage.
1. Always turn off the electricity or gas first
-
Electric patio heaters: Unplug the plug.
-
Gas heaters: Close and disconnect the gas cylinder.
This way you can prevent dangerous situations and work safely.
2. Allow the patio heater to cool down completely
It sounds obvious, but it often goes wrong: never clean a patio heater while it's still hot. Wait at least 30 minutes for all parts to cool down.
3. Use the right cleaning materials
-
Soft, dry cloth: For removing dust and dirt.
-
Microfiber cloth or slightly damp cloth: For stubborn dirt.
-
No harsh cleaning agents: Avoid abrasives, solvents, or bleach, as these may damage the coating or electrical components.
4. Gently clean the outside
-
Wipe away dust, sand and dirt with a soft cloth.
-
For metal or coated surfaces: Use a slightly damp cloth, but ensure that no water drips into any openings.
5. Carefully clean the heating element
-
Use a dry cloth or soft brush to remove dust.
-
Do not touch the element with bare hands; skin oils can shorten the life of some types (such as halogen tubes).
6. Check the ventilation openings
-
Gently blow or sweep away dust and cobwebs.
-
Clogged openings prevent heat transfer and can cause overheating.
7. Protect after cleaning
-
Place a protective cover over the patio heater when not in use.
-
Place it in a dry place or under cover to prevent dirt and moisture.
π‘ Extra tip from our specialists:
Clean your patio heater at least once per season, preferably in the spring before the outdoor season begins. This will keep it in top condition and extend its lifespan.
